90. Healthy solitude
The practice of music and art
Hi friends,
A short note for you as I get back into the swing of things. I often talk about how music and art, when done in group settings, can be a wonderful way to escape isolation and loneliness. It is important to stay connected with others, and participatory art programs are one of the best ways do this.
When you create art, there is an added bonus. In the time between your group sessions, you practice your craft in solitude. You do this when you practice your music at home alone between ensemble rehearsals. When you memorize your lines for a play. When you draw or paint at home between art classes. When you write your poetry between community readings.
Practicing your art at home is one of the healthiest ways to experience alone time. There is a difference between isolation and solitude. Being able to spend time alone - in solitude - in a healthy way is very important. We can’t always be around other people. So when we’re alone, we need to find ways to continue to grow as a person. Ways to be healthy and positive. Solitude with purpose. Alone time that recharges our souls. Our art does this for us, and so much more.
I hope you are able to spend some time this week in solitude practicing your craft. Make time to dance in your living room, sing in the shower. Explore your art.
Be creative.

great topic. extrovert here who has always required alone time every day. began using the phrase "with myself" instead of "by myself" as a young adult. time for writing, reading, exercising, crafting, meditating, or simply thinking, doing puzzles, organizing. would not survive my days without time alone. since pmac, add playing music. yes!
